A collection of piano trios by 19th century German composer Emily Meyer (1812-1883). Born in Friedland, northern Germany, Emilie Meyer moved to Szczecin (now Szczecin, Poland) at the end of her twenties to study with Karl Röwe (1796-1869), a composer famous for his ballads. She was the first full-fledged female composer in the history of German music in that she vigorously composed in a wide range of fields, including opera. Her works are fascinating and do not need to be categorized as female composers at all. In the past few years, recordings of her symphonies have been released one after another, and this collection of her piano trios is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the wonderful talent of Emilie Meyer. The Hannover Piano Trio's second CD, following Beethoven's Piano Quartets (GEN 19673), is said to have been surprised by the excellence of Meyer's piano trios, which had been buried under the surface, and featured them in a concert, leading to this recording. It is true that this is a wonderful performance overflowing with empathy. I recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys chamber music of the German Romantic era.
