MAHLER, G.

Description:

Christoph Poppen, second music director of the Deutsche Rundfunk Philharmonie! The clarity and romanticism of the music is not over-emphasized. He expresses the true beauty of the music in a straightforward manner. The tight tempo, the good flow of the music, and the phrasing that accentuates the three-dimensionality of the music. His first recording for Ames Classics, the complete Mendelssohn symphonies (OC709), was a performance that stood out for its clear-cut compositional sense and solid orchestral control of Mendelssohn. The performance is a new interpretation of Tchaikovsky that differs from the overly modernized Russian style. Christoph Poppen is a violinist and conductor born in 1956 in Munster, Germany. In 1978, he founded the Cherubini String Quartet, which won the Grand Prix at the Evian International String Quartet Competition in 1981.In 1988, he became music director of the Detmold Chamber Orchestra; in 1995, he was appointed music director of the Munich Chamber Orchestra; from 1988 to 1995, he was professor at the State University of Music in Detmold, and since 1996, he has been president of the State University of Music Berlin. He also plays baroque violin, and his "Bach/Molimur" with the Hilliard Ensemble, released by ECM, was an international sensation. Since the 2007 season, he has been the Music Director of the Deutsche Rundfunk Philharmonie (formerly known as the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra). [Comment courtesy of Sony Music.]
