Ravi Shankar is one of the most celebrated performers of North Indian classical music and a world-renowned sitar player who is regarded as a master of Indian classical music. He has devoted himself to the training of his successors, and is highly regarded and respected around the world for opening the door to Western music and having a profound influence on the popular music of the 20th century. It was George Harrison of The Beatles who looked up to him as a mentor, weaving a bond of friendship and respect that lasted for the rest of his life. After performing the sitar in the Beatles' classic "Norwegian Wood," George was captivated by the mysterious charm of the instrument and became immersed in the world of oriental music.In 1973, George welcomed Shankar to his own label, and in 1974, he released Shankar Family & Friends, one of the first releases on Dark Horse Records, the label run by George Harrison, whom he looked up to as his mentor, The album featured an all-star lineup of Western musicians, including Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Klaus Boorman, Jim Keltner, and Nicky Hopkins, along with Indian music pioneers Alla Rakha, Ashish Khan, and Shivkumar Sharmla, Hariprasad Chaurasia, and other all-stars from the East to create an album that blends Eastern and Western music. Produced by George Harrison, the album also includes "I Am Missing You," the first single released on Dark Horse Records. The song combines Eastern and Western musical styles, with a Western rock band backing the song and Lakshmi Shankar's vocals.In 2010, a boxed set, "COLLABORATIONS," was released to document the lifelong friendship between George Harrison and Ravi Shankar.
