Kohlwerk Ruhr, one of Germany's foremost chamber choirs, who can sing choral music from any era, has taken up two complex contemporary works in this astonishing disc, in which a tremendous score is beautifully sounded. The SACD hybrid version is also a delight! Stockhausen's "Carré Carre" is an even more difficult work than "Gruppen," with four conductors controlling four groups of orchestra and chorus. Each note is an extremely complex network of gears, and the conductor must be thoroughly skilled in discerning and distributing the timing in detail. Perhaps the aim was rather to create a friction that would make the audience's hands sweat as the piece is played by a human being who cannot reach the perfect machine. Bach's four-voice chorales contain the core of music and harmony so perfectly that even Kergel has said they are "a first-class musical experience. The Chorbuch, a collection of 53 chorales compiled from those chorales, is in alphabetical order, but when performed, the chorales can be excerpted, in any order, or combined with other works.Here, Kergel's score is contrasted with organ solos and Bach choral chorales. The numbing complexity of the music features a variety of unique endorsements, including shouting, gesturing, and the use of megaphones. King International.
