The production that established Handel at the Bavarian State Opera! Giulio Cesare", live from 2002! FARAO CLASSICS presents a live recording of Handel's masterpiece "Giulio Cesare" from 2002. Of course, it is conducted by Ivar Bolton, who has made baroque opera a staple at the Bavarian State Opera. Anne Murray in the title role and Christopher Robson as the antagonist Tolomeo are both regulars at Handel in Munich, having appeared in "Ariodante" at the same opera house's Japan tour in 2005, and they sing with the dignity of veterans. Cleopatra, who is even more pivotal than the title role, is sung by Susan Gritton, a British soprano who specializes in Handel. She is a beautiful Cleopatra, full of devilish charm.Another key role, Patricia Burdon as the widow Cornelia, is an Irish mezzo-soprano. She, too, is a Handel specialist, and Cornelia is a hit role that was performed to great acclaim at the Glyndebourne Festival, where it was made into a film. Katharina Karneus, who sings Sesto, is a mezzo-soprano born in Stockholm. She is a singer with a wide repertoire and has recently sung Fricka and Brangäne, but at that time she was active mainly in the UK as Handel's mezzo. Bolton sings lively Handel at an early tempo. This production was premiered in March 1994. At the time, it was extremely rare for a major opera house to perform a baroque opera, and it was quite an experimental experiment, but Richard Jones' entertaining and stimulating direction was a big hit in Munich, and since then it has become a Munich staple that always draws a big crowd whenever it is performed.The booklet includes a number of color photographs of that stage, which is a nice touch.
