Tarantella, a detoxification dance with organ and folk instruments, is a dance from Naples in southern Italy. The tarantula, a poisonous spider, lived in the vicinity of Taranto in southeastern Italy, and this dance had a therapeutic meaning when a person was attacked by the poisonous spider. At that time, there was no medical treatment, and the only way was through this fast-rhythmic music. Musicians are said to have gone to churches, squares, and patients' homes and played the tarantella to detoxify them. This album is the result of many years of research by organist Liuwe Tamminga, and features works from the 17th to the 20th century, including organs from the southern Italian cities of Galatina, Corigliano, and Casalano, tambourines and castanets with their strong accents, which are ideal for "therapy," and trombones, mandolins, and guitars.
