This portrait album celebrates the 70th birthday of contemporary composer Lutz-Werner Hesse (1955-), a native of Bonn, Germany, and president of the "Wuppertal Concert Association". He studied musicology and composition at the Cologne Conservatory with Günter Falk and Jürg Bauer and is currently professor and managing director of the University of Music and Dance Cologne in Wuppertal, Cologne. Hesse's compositional activities are centered on chamber and orchestral music, and he has received commissions from various orchestras in Germany for which he has produced numerous masterpieces.
The main works, String Quartets Nos. 1-4, reflect his exploration and deep contemplation of this genre, and are at once contemporary and respectful of tradition. Also to be heard are his "Autumn Fan" for soprano, cello, and piano, and "Songs from Far Away" for oboe and string trio, a fusion of vocal and instrumental music. The chamber music pieces also include flute, horn, and clarinet, with each wind instrument playing a separate leading role, and the diversity of orchestration and colorful musical language is impressive.
Lutz-Werner Hesse is known for his conservative style as a contemporary composer.
Composition is an essential part of my life and a way of expressing myself.Composing is a part of my life and opens up unexpected spaces in the creative process. My goal is to make these spaces accessible and understandable to my audience. It is important to me to write only what will be heard. Therefore, I am not interested in abstract and (too) complex structures; I am very interested in presenting an organic process that is understandable. For me it is more important to relive it carefully (emotionally) than to understand it intellectually. Only then can the music achieve an effect worthy of its very special power."
