The 2014 ORFEO "Salzburg Festival Documents" piece is a tribute to Claudio Abbado, who passed away in January 2014, and features live performances at the Salzburg Festival with two youth orchestras that the master conducted, both of which he was deeply involved in founding. The performance with the EC Youth Orchestra (now renamed the EU Youth Orchestra), for which Abbado was music director from its inception in 1976, is from 1979. This was the year after Abbado led the young musicians on their inaugural tour of Amsterdam, Bonn, Paris, Luxembourg, Brussels, Milan, and Rome, and since it was the debut performance of the festival, the program included Schoenberg and Stravinsky, Abbado's specialty, The program includes Schoenberg and Stravinsky, both of which are Abbado's favorites, and even the encore, "The Death of Tybalt," which is a very spirited performance.In "Survivor of Warsaw," Maximilian Schell, the famous Austrian actor known for his roles in the films "The Nuremberg Trials" and "The Bridge Too Far," delivers a powerful narration. The Gustav Mahler Jugend Orchestra, which has produced members of the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and many other leading European orchestras, was also founded in 1986 at the instigation of Abbado, who remained its music director until his death. Mussorgsky was one of Abbado's favorite composers, and "One Night on Bald Mountain" is performed in its original version, as in the session recording with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1980 and the live recording with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1993. As with the EC Youth Orchestra, the performance of "One Night on Bald Mountain" was produced in collaboration with young musicians who adore the master and are overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of the performance.Note that all of the tracks on this album have previously been released as independent releases by the Music Festival, but they have been out of print for a long time, so we are happy to see their catalog revival.
