Description:
The hard-edged Schelling performs enthusiastically! Rare recordings of Nardini and Wu-Tang, as well as his 18th, Ravel, and Schumann. Schelling's brilliant performance in his 30s, when he was at a turning point in his life, is now available on Hensler's SWR Archive Reprint Series! The recordings include Nardini's Violin Concerto in E minor, Wuertin's Violin Concerto No. 4, Ravel's Tigane, and Schumann's Violin Concerto, recorded live for broadcast and session recording with the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra under Hans Rothbout. Henrik Schelling (1918-1988) was highly praised for his talent by Arthur Rubinstein in 1954, and Rubinstein strongly encouraged him to pursue an international concert career. This disc is the most glorious record of Schelling in his 30s, recorded in 1955 and 1957, when he was at a turning point in his life.Nardini and Wuertin was recorded live in January 1955. Nardini (1722-93) was a violinist who studied with Tartini and was a direct descendant of him, serving as concertmaster of the court orchestra in Stuttgart and as director of the court music of the Grand Duke of Toscana in Florence, where he composed concertos and sonatas for violin. Many of his works are melodious and pursue the beauty of the violin, and were performed by many of the great masters of the 20th century, with Schelling being one of his favorites. The Violin Concerto in E minor recorded here is Nardini's masterpiece, performed here in Schelling's revised version. The Wuertin is also a great performance that allows the audience to immerse themselves in the music without any superlative technique. Ravel and Schumann were recorded for broadcast in March 1957.Both pieces were especially beloved by Schelling, and there are several recordings of them, but this recording is the freshest performance of Schelling at his peak in the 1950s. The archival master tapes are in good condition, and the sound quality is easy to listen to even though it is in mono. King International
