This is a collection of melodramas, which are considered hidden masterpieces among Sibelius' works. Melodrama is a form of music that combines recitation and accompaniment, and was especially popular in France. Sibelius wrote several melodramas in his youth, all of which are masterpieces filled with fresh beauty, but they were not often performed, and even recordings of them are rare. The Enviable Night" is a powerful work that approaches 15 minutes in length and includes a soprano. The Lonely Ski Trace" is a short piece of less than 4 minutes, but very attractive music. There are two versions, one for piano and the other for harp and string ensemble, the latter being performed here. Portrait of a Countess" is often performed without the reading, and two versions are included here, one with the reading and one without. The "Spirit of the Forest" is a sibling of the orchestral ballad "Spirit of the Forest. The readings are basically in French, but "Lonely Ski Trails" is also recorded in its original language, Swedish. Vincent Figury is a French musician and poet. Ensemble Calliope is a chamber ensemble founded in 1999. Shigeko Hata, a native of Fukushima Prefecture, sings soprano solo. Tobu Shoji Co.
