Description:

New solo recording by Philippe Griswal! A collection of unknown concertos from Berlin! A new recording by Johannes Plamzoller, a baroque violinist of the "21st century generation" who has made his way from South Tyrol to the world, and the Ensemble Diderot, which he founded. The soloist is the famous French harpsichordist Philippe Griswal, a core member of the Ensemble Diderot and accompanist to Plamzoller on many performances and recordings. With the coronation of Friedrich II in 1740, Berlin's musical history reached an unprecedented peak. The many palaces in Prussia were filled with beautiful sounds, and renowned and distinguished musicians gathered there. Many of the musicians employed by King Friedrich II were trillionaires in the "solo concerto with keyboard obbligato," a genre that was beginning to flourish at the various courts of the time. The album features Christoph Schafrath, who was one of the founding members of the orchestra that Friedrich founded when he was Dauphin and is said to have been a fervent "Bach follower"; Karl Heinrich Graun, the Prussian court music director; and while a student at St. Thomas' Church in Leipzig, Bach's cantatas Four harpsichord concertos by Christoph Nichtelmann, who sang as a soprano and became second harpsichordist at the court of King Friedrich II, and Ernst Wilhelm Wolf, who was concertmaster and court music director at the court of the Archduke Weimar. The original conception included works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the second son of the great Bach, also known as "Bach of Berlin," but Griswal's research uncovered many unpublished works, and after much deliberation, these little-known works were selected.
