Yuri Kuroda is a violinist born in New York and currently based in Paris. She studied under Gérard Boulez at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris. She has won many prizes, including the first prize at the Paris Bach International Violin Competition and a special prize at the Lipitzer International Competition, and continues to give energetic concerts in the fields of solo and chamber music.The album includes Prokofiev's last sonata for violin, a superbly difficult piece by the great 20th century violinist Natan Milshteyn based on the theme of Paganini's famous Caprice No. 24, and a piece by Claude Pascal, a composer who had a close friendship with Ms. Kuroda. The album contains a wide variety of works, including a piece dedicated to Ms. Kuroda, which is rich in esprit de corps. Yuri Kuroda is not well known in Japan, perhaps because he lives in Europe, but he has a solid technique and a lustrous tone. She is a performer who deserves to be heard more in Japan. (Tobu Shoji)
