Among J.S. Bach’s vast body of instrumental works, the “Works for Lute” have long been the subject of debate regarding their authenticity and interpretive possibilities. The scores left behind by Bach, a master of the keyboard, contain many passages that are difficult to perform on instruments of that era, and this has long puzzled musicologists, who have questioned whether these works were “truly intended for the lute.” On this album, Claire Antonini—one of France’s leading lute players—has transposed and rearranged these works based on manuscript sources to suit the characteristics of the 13-course Baroque lute. She richly brings out the lute’s distinctive resonance, polyphony, and subtle nuances. Claire Antonini, who trained at the Lyon National Conservatory of Music, performs throughout France and abroad, contributing significantly to the popularization of 17th-century French lute music. In addition to her solo career, she is active as a continuo player with leading Baroque ensembles such as “Le Concert Spirituel,” and as an accompanist for the world-renowned countertenor Philippe Jaroussky.
