Flottola is the general term for the secular songs of the Italian Renaissance, which flourished in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Guided by the delicate tones of Hopkinson-Smith's lute, Klussman's voice is crystal clear and beautiful as she transports the listener to the little-known world of the early Renaissance, moving back and forth between France and Italy. Hopkinson Smith was born in New York in 1946. After studying musicology at Harvard University, he moved to Europe to study the lute. He is one of the founding members of Esperion XX and a leading figure in the lute world. German singer Zofie Klussmann is sought after around the world for her flawless control of singing, from ancient music to Kurtág, Ligeti, Stockhausen, and even recitals of songs.Here the voice is extremely delicate, reminding us that most of the subject matter of the songs on this CD is about love.
