Hyperion presents a new album of recordings by the British choral group Huddersfield Choral Society of Elgar's famous choral masterpiece, the oratorio "The Dream of Gerontius". 2 CD set. Timed to coincide with the release of the new film "The Choral," starring Rafe Fiennes, the story of the film overlaps remarkably with the history of this choral group. The film is set in 1916 in a fictional town in Yorkshire. It depicts a choral group from the North of England preparing for a performance of Elgar's "The Dream of Gerontius," despite the sacrifices and difficulties faced by their comrades fighting on the Western Front. The Huddersfield Choral Society, whose 23 members served in World War I and suffered the same problems as the film, performed this masterpiece under Elgar's own direction in 1917 during the war. The Choral" is both the title of the film and the nickname of the Huddersfield Choral Society.The film is directed by Nicholas Hytner, written by Alan Bennett, and stars three-time Academy Award-nominated actor Rafe Fiennes as the choir's conductor, along with familiar names from the British theater world, including Simon Russell Beale and Roger Allam. The album features the Opera North Orchestra conducted by Martin Brabbins, tenor David Batt Philip, and mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill. 2025 was first recorded by the Huddersfield Choral Society in 1945, The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the Huddersfield Choral Society's first recording in 1945, which was a great success.
