Description:

Stephen Hough. Recorded his own "Piano Concerto"! Stephen Hough is a British virtuoso who has received four Grammy nominations and eight Gramophone Awards, including two "Record of the Year" awards. A leading composer/pianist of our time, Hough has often included his own piano compositions and arrangements on his own albums, and his recordings of cello sonatas, string quartets, and masses have been released on Hyperion, but this is the first album on Hyperion to feature all of Hough's own compositions. This is the first album of his own compositions on Hyperion. Yesterday's World," Hough's first "piano concerto," was commissioned in the dark days of the pandemic as "music for a film about a concert pianist who writes a piano concerto," and was completed in 2023 and given its world premiere in January 2024 with Hough's own solo and the Utah Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Donald Runnicles. The world premiere of the piece was performed in January 2024 with his own solo and the Utah Symphony Orchestra conducted by Donald Runnicles. This album contains the live performance of the British premiere in May of the same year, which marked the end of Mark Elder's 24-year tenure as music director of the Orchestre Halle. The subtitle "The world of yesterday" is borrowed from Stefan Zweig's memoirs of the same name, and has a combined meaning of the history of the piano concerto form itself and the history of the pianists. The coupling solo works are "Sonatina nostalgica," written to celebrate the 70th birthday of his friend Philip Falk, and "Partita," commissioned for the Walter W. Normberg Foundation's 2017 competition winner, Albert Cano Smit. From Mozart to Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Prokofiev, and Bartók, look forward to Stephen Hough's "Piano Concerto" which will add another page to the history of piano concertos that have become the "calling cards" of composer-pianists. Please look forward to Stephen Hough's "Piano Concerto"! Tokyo M-Plus
