Beethoven's Symphonies by the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music An interesting program including works from the same period is now available on 3 CDs! In conjunction with the Beethoven Year, the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music presents a three-disc set of Beethoven's symphonies. All of them feature Beethoven's symphonies as well as contemporary and related works. The Berlin Academy of Ancient Music has done an outstanding job. Cherubini's opera "Rodoyska" was premiered in Paris in 1791. It was a great success and was performed more than 200 times at the time. The overture is more symphonic in style than foreshadowing of the opera's content. The work by Meilleur, a friend of Cherubini, was once described by Schumann and others as "a response to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony" (due to the similarity of the last movement's rhythm to that of Fate, among other reasons). However, it is not clear to what extent he was familiar with the Fifth Symphony (composed in 1808) when he was working on this symphony.Rather, it is worth noting that such a great symphony existed during the French Revolution and left a significant mark on subsequent French orchestral composition. Knecht's work is from 1780 (in G major). From the beginning, it is a beautiful world of rural world. In the second movement, a storm gradually approaches, which is expressed by anxiously repeated modulations. The description of the storm in the third movement is in the gorgeous key of D major, reminiscent of an operatic overture, and is very different from Beethoven's "Rural" in that it is more intriguing. The final movement takes the form of a variation, but is a refreshing chorale-like piece. The titles of the movements of Beethoven's Sixth Symphony and Knecht's are similar. In fact, although no reliable documentation has survived, it is likely that Beethoven was aware of Knecht's work, as his early works were published by the same publisher as Knecht's. There have been attempts to imitate nature in music since that time, and Knecht's works may have been innovative at the time of 1780. HARMONIA MUNDI
