Arall's Fleshing Out BachThe Eighth Collection of Bach's Complete Keyboard WorksThe eighth collection of Bach's Complete Keyboard Works, a great challenge by the virtuoso Arall, includes Inventions, Sinfonias, and the French Suite, among others. The instruments used are harpsichord, clavichord, and pedal clavichord. The "Maria Barbara" (1684-1720) of the title was Bach's first wife. Her father was an organist and composer, and it is believed that she received her musical education from him, but few details are known (W.F. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, and other sons who are still famous as composers today are children of Maria Barbara). Arall has included the name "Maria Barbara" in this album because many of the works written around 1717-23 (or for which a clean copy of the score has survived) must have been completed or conceived while he was living with her. The Marquis of Keten, whom Bach served during the "Keten period," was a Calvinist (who believed that music was an obstacle to faith), so Bach did not write church cantatas.He wrote a great deal of secular music during this period, including the "Brandenburg Concerto," "Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin," "Inventions," and "The First Book of the Mean," all of which are known from autographs from this period (it is unclear if all were composed and completed during this period). died in July 1720.
