In addition to Telemann, as many as 13 other composers, including Handel, Kaiser, and Matthison, have been attached to the text of this Passion, which he wrote. Telemann's Passion was premiered on April 2, 1716, with great success, and became so famous that the great Bach, in 1739 (around age 45, after he himself had composed the Matthew and John Passions), transcribed and studied the entire work. Jacobs has brought Telemann's masterpiece, with its humanistic and intertwined sounds, back to life with great brilliance and freshness in the modern age. The overture is an instrumental sinfonia. What a treat to hear such a full symphonia, which sounds like an oboe concerto, performed by the famous Berlin Academy of Ancient Music! In contrast to Bach's Passion, in which the role of the evangelist is very important, in Telemann's work, each soloist plays the role of "faithful" and represents the heart of the believer (=me) with double and triple chorus in each scene.The scene where Jesus says on the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" is truly human and dramatic. The closing chorale, with its soaring trumpet sound, is a powerful celebration of our deliverance from sin through Jesus' death, and it is a very glorious conclusion.
