Bach by Tharaud, a Magician of ToneAlexandre Tharaud, a wizard of tone, returns with his 2004 recording of Bach's Concertos in Italian Style, a collection of exquisite slow movements with a seductive sensuality. Tharaud first came to prominence with his 2001 recording of works by the French Baroque master Rameau (1683-1764), played on modern piano. This collection of Bach's works follows in his footsteps. The title of this collection is "Concertos in Italian Style," and the selections include Italian concertos as well as works by Vivaldi and Marcello, which Bach was fascinated by and arranged for piano. From the beginning of the disc, Sicilienne, the world of the piano, which could only be performed by Taro's hands, unfolds with the cool texture of a modern piano. The first movement of the Italian Concerto is very brilliant, the second movement is serene, and the third movement, with its fast passages, is brilliantly executed. The eloquence of the fast movement is of course impressive, but Taro's music in the slow movement, which grabs one's heart and does not let go, is even seductively sensual and breathtaking.
