From the joyful brilliance of the passages to the unexpected shadowy expression of the slow movement, the two virtuosos have created an ensemble that is unparalleled. The C major sonata of KV 303, thought to have been composed in 1778, is a special piece in which the first movement alternates between a cantabile adagio in a distinctly vocal style and an Allegro molto, which is clearly instrumental in character. The second movement, a minuet, follows sonata form. The last work on the CD, KV 481, was written in December 1785, the same year that "The Marriage of Figaro" and the concerto masterpieces were produced, and the composer established himself as a well-paid freelance musician.
