Description:
Harmonia Mundi Celebrates the Beethoven Year Series Beethoven's Complete Symphonies Recording Project, Now in its Complete Edition! Harmonia Mundi's release of the Beethoven Year Series Symphony Edition is now complete with No. 4 & No. 8 by the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music! Previous symphony releases have included works from the same period as a coupling, and this is no different. This time, works by Cherubini (1760-1842) and Mehul (1763-1817) are chosen. The Berlin Academy of Ancient Music's excellent recording of these works is a delight to behold. In Beethoven's Beethoven Symphony No. 4, the bassoon playing in the last movement, for example, is the height of superb technique, but there is not the slightest irregularity in the recording. The rich sound of the timpani was also memorable. (The timpani player was Francisco Manuel Angus Rodriguez, who was born in Seville in 1990 and became the principal timpani player at a young age. He had studied at Toho Gakuen School at the invitation of Keiko Abe, and after playing at the Berlin State Opera, he also performed at the Bayreuth Festival.) The lightness of the first movement of No. 8, created by the fast tempo, like a dance, was also a surprise. After the first movement, the metronome-like ticking of the second movement also sounded very effective. Cherubini's opera "Rodoyska" was first performed in Paris in 1791. It was a great success and was performed more than 200 times at the time. The overture is more symphonic in style than foreshadowing of the opera's content. Meilleur, who was a friend of Cherubini's, is sometimes described by Schumann and others as "a response to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony" (due to the similarity of the rhythm of the last movement to that of Fate), but it is unclear how much he knew about the Fifth (composed in 1808) when he was working on this symphony. It is not clear now how much he knew about the 5th symphony (composed in 1808) when he was working on this symphony.Rather, it is a celebration of the existence of such a great symphony during the French Revolution, of the great mark it left on subsequent French orchestral composition, and of the definitive new masterful recording by the Berlin Academy of Ancient Music.
