A Bouquet of Modern French Music Cello Works by Debussy and DutilleuxThe world of cello works by Debussy and Dutilleux, two masters of French music. Debussy's Cello Sonata was written as one of a series of six sonatas for various instruments, a series of instrumental pieces he conceived in his final years. (In fact, Debussy was only able to complete three of these sonatas before his death: the Violin Sonata, the Sonata for Flute, Harp, and Viola, and this Cello Sonata.) Among the neat works that hark back to the music of French antiquity, especially that of Couperin, the "Cello Sonata" is also full of nobility, combined with the austerity and sadness of the cello's tone.Dutilleux's "Three Strophes in the Name of Sacher" was composed by Dutilleux and 12 other composers to commemorate the 70th birthday of the Swiss conductor Paul Sacher, using the spelling of his name (SACHER) as the sound name. The variety of expressions and textures spun out of the solo cello make this piece an eloquent expression of the cello instrument. Dutilleux's Cello Concerto "To a Far Far Country" is a five-movement work commissioned by cellist Rostropovich. The title is taken from a passage from Baudelaire's poem "The Flower of Evil" entitled "Hair". Opening with a monologue by the cello, the piece passes through a variety of changing landscapes in a delicate soundscape before converging once again into silence.
