The America Dvořák Saw, the America of Today. The 17th installment in the series featuring Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra REFERENCE RECORDINGS has long been highly regarded as a label known for its exceptional sound quality. This release is a collaboration between soundmirror—which has been responsible for recordings for numerous labels renowned for their sound quality, including REFERENCE RECORDINGS, PENTATONE, BIS—and has been responsible for their recordings for over 40 years. From this highly acclaimed “Pittsburgh Live!” series, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 in E-flat minor, Op. 95, “From the New World,” is now available. This album also features a recording of Four Black American Dances by Carlos Simon, one of the leading contemporary American composers. This album was recorded live in February 2025 at Heinz Hall, the historic home of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and captures the full immediacy of the performance with exceptional sound quality. Höneck has once again contributed detailed commentary to this album, offering deep insights and his own unique interpretation of Dvořák’s masterpiece. In particular, he states, “What makes Dvořák special is his exceptional compositional technique and his ability to directly transform emotions welling up from within into music.” The sensibility nurtured within Bohemian musical culture culminated in the Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” a truly unique work that, while incorporating American elements, retains a strong Czech character. Carlos Simon (b. 1986) is the Resident Composer of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and serves as the inaugural Composer-in-Residence at the Boston Symphony Orchestra; he is a leading figure in the contemporary American music scene. His compositional style, which incorporates elements of jazz and gospel, is highly acclaimed; in 2023, he was nominated for a Grammy Award for Requiem for the Enslaved, a work based on the history of slavery. The Four Black American Dances included in this recording were premiered on February 9, 2023, by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Andris Nelsons. Dance is an essential element of every culture and has served as a central hub of social interaction, particularly within the African American community. Drawing on four themes—“Ring Shout,” “Waltz,” “Tap Dance,” and “Holy Dance”—this work explores their musical expressions through orchestral arrangements, symbolically depicting aspects of diverse cultural backgrounds.
