Description:

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of its premiere. Karl Jenkins' work for a peaceful future in the "next millennium". Karl Jenkins - The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace British composer Karl Jenkins (1944-) will release his album "The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace" (2001) on Decca. The album was commissioned by the Royal Armouries, the UK's national museum of arms and armoury, to mark the transition from one millennium to the next. It reflects the passing of "the most war-torn and destructive century in the history of mankind" and hopes to move toward a more peaceful future. The Armed Man is dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo conflict, whose tragedy unfolded during its composition, and was premiered in 2000 by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, conducted by Jenkins himself. Jenkins and Guy Wilson, director of the Royal Armouries, chose the lyrics together. The entire work takes the form of a traditional Catholic Mass and includes the Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, and Benedictus. Some of these have been heard as popular stand-alone pieces on "ClassicFM" and elsewhere, but what makes this work special are the lyrics, which are taken from around the world and from diverse religions and cultures, and the music, too, is very globally minded in its conception. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the premiere, the album cover has been redesigned to include the story of the commission by Guy Wilson, Director of the Royal Armory, new biographies of the contributors, a new essay from Julian Lloyd Webber on the premiere, and an essay by Karl Jenkins himself. The book also includes an essay by Karl Jenkins himself.
