The Golden Renaissance" is a series by the British Stile Antico featuring the great composers of the Renaissance,The first installment, "Josquin des Prez," and the following "William Byrd" were both well received. The Italian composer, born on February 3, 1525, was one of the most important musicians of the late 16th century and had a long-lasting influence on the development of church and secular music in Europe. He had a long-lasting influence on the development of European church and secular music. The album is based on Palestrina's famous Mass for Pope Marcellus, in which he was able to escape the ban on church music from the Catholic Church by using a new style of polyphony. Motets honored in the Papal Chapel of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome during his time and associated with the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore were also selected, including Palestrina's most famous motet, "As the Deer Long for the Valley (Sicut cervus)". Stile Antico is a Grammy-nominated a capella group specializing in polyphonic music composed before the 18th century, and is known as one of the finest and most innovative vocal ensembles in the world. Its crystal clear harmonies captivate people. The first "Josquin des Prez" album won the "British Gramophone Award" in the "Spatial Audio Category". The "William Byrd" album was also acclaimed as "Byrd's music could not have sounded more beautiful... the singers perfectly capture the transparent beauty that Byrd's music ideally deserves" (BBC Music Magazine).
