To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the work's premiere in 1949, Deutsche Grammophon has released an album featuring Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony Orchestra performing Messiaen's "Turangalila Symphony," a magnificent "sonic masterpiece" by one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. It was digitally released last year on Deutsche Grammophon to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the work's premiere in 1949. The Turangalila Symphony was originally commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra through its music director, Sergei Koussevitsky. The ten-movement symphony features a large orchestra with various percussion instruments, a solo piano, and an ondes martenot (an early electronic instrument). Here Cecil Lartigo, one of the few modern ondes martenos, plays. Lartigo and pianist Yuja Wang, two superb soloists, along with the Boston Symphony Orchestra led by Nelsons, reveal all of the work's kaleidoscopic colors, enthralling harmonies, and overwhelming emotional drama.The recording was made in April 2024 at Symphony Hall in Boston. The year 2024 was also the 150th anniversary of Sergei Koussevitzky's birth and the 100th anniversary of his appointment as the orchestra's music director for the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
