Sparkling pianism, the complete Argo recordings of the British virtuoso pianist The great British pianist John Ogdon, known as a virtuoso pianist, will release his complete recordings for Argo and Decca in a 6-CD box set. Ogdon entered the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern College of Music) in 1953 at the age of 16, and astonished his classmates with his ability to play any score of any complexity, ancient or modern, and with his quick memory and comparable skill on the keyboard. He shared the first prize with Vladimir Ashkenazy at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1962, and made his first recording for Decca six years later, in December 1968. With Messiaen's collection of piano works, Twenty Gazes on the Infant Jesus, he returned to the tradition of Liszt's pianism in the new postwar era. Over the next three years he recorded four more albums, three of them with his wife, Brenda Lucas. The diverse repertoire reveals Ogdon's wide-ranging musical talents and intellectual curiosity.Messiaen's technical "Vision of Amen" and the free and youthful concertos of Mendelssohn and Shostakovich are also included, as is Liszt's "Concerto Pathetique," an arrangement for two pianos of his "Grand Concerto Solo" that Ogdon and Lucas recorded in 1972, a piece little known at the time. Ogdon's career began in 1973. Ogdon's career was abruptly interrupted by illness in 1973, but he returned in June 1983 to record Mozart's Quintet for Piano and Winds. He then met an untimely and sad death in 1989. The booklet includes a new, detailed account of Ogdon's life and career by Mark Ainley. In original jacket.
