The 14-CD box set sheds new light on Maazel's spectacular early career, when he first took the orchestra seriously. In 1963, he succeeded Ferenc Flitschai as music director of the Rundfunk Symphonieorchester Berlin, a position he had held since his debut with the orchestra in Berlin in 1955. The orchestra had already established a close relationship with Maazel, who made his debut with the orchestra in Berlin in 1955.
