Description:

Elegance and nobility... a compilation of Philips recordings by the finest Dutch contralto singers. For the first time, all of the Philips recordings by the supreme Dutch contralto Aafe Heynis are available together in a 14-CD box set. Heynis has been singing in church since childhood, and the faith and humility conveyed in her singing captivated Dutch audiences after the war. The decisive event was his debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Eduard van Beinum, where he performed Brahms' "Alto Rhapsodie". Despite his apprehension, Heynis showed little nervousness on the spot, and this marked the beginning of his international career. He then recorded folk songs, songs, and religious repertoire for Philips. In the "Original Light" from Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony with Bernard Haitink, Heynis brought to it the same grace, nobility, and weight of expression that he brings to all his singing. This recording has remained in the catalog almost uninterruptedly since its release. Conversely, less well known today are Bach's cantatas and Handel's "Dettingen te Deum" and "Dixit Dominus". Even rarer are the collections of religious arias with organ accompaniment by Pierre Parra and Simon C. Jansen. It includes Beethoven's Ninth with Igor Markevich, a Lieder album with Irwin Gage, and Gluck's Orfeo and Euridice, recorded in 1973. This is a rare and great recording of a great singer that will move the listener. Remastered from rare sources, this set is accompanied by extensive photographic documentation and a new essay by Jean-Charles Hoffele celebrating the life and art of Heynis. In original dust jacket. Please note that some of the recordings may be omitted from this set, even though it is claimed to be a complete collection. Universal Music/IMS
