BENT CITY is the first 1967 album by Bay Area multi-instrumentalist Phil Yost. A one-man sound by Yost, who plays bass, flute, saxophone, and percussion, it is a brilliant, strange, and deeply personal work that blends jazz improvisation, ambient textures, and avant-garde sound collage. This is the first in a series of archival projects releasing the astonishing music he creates, which has never been reissued since its original release and has rarely been heard except by a few enthusiasts. Released on guitar pioneers John Fahey and Ed Denson's Tacoma label, the album was produced entirely by Fahey himself at home, using what was then a painstaking "sound-on-sound" method, layering his playing on a custom-built 1/4-inch tape machine. A slow, hypnotic suite of shimmering overtones, bass patterns, delicate guitar riffs, haunting saxophones, and ghostly voices. The time has finally come for many to hear the work of the great composer of one-of-a-kind cerebral music.Fully licensed from Phil Yost Estate and Concord, remastered from the original tapes, with an 8-page booklet containing previously unseen photos and episodes.
