Includes the world's first CD release of the recording. With the full cooperation of the Cleveland Orchestra. In 1972, Lorin Maazel was appointed Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra, a position that had been vacant for two years since the death of George Szell. This was the first permanent position in an American orchestra for the then 42-year-old Maazel. For ten years, until his retirement in 1982, he maintained and developed the quality and polished the image of the Cleveland Orchestra, which had been established by Sell and had distinguished itself among the "Big Five" American orchestras. After arriving at Cleveland, Maazel began recording for Decca, which had previously made numerous recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic, and began releasing a series of high-profile recordings, including the first ever complete recordings of Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" and Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess.Maazel's recording contract with CBS Masterworks began in 1976 with Brahms' German Requiem and Alto Rhapsody with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, and he began recording with the Cleveland Orchestra for CBS in 1977 with Life of a Hero (Disc 2). In Japan, the album made a big splash with a heavy knight illustration by Shiro Tatsumi on the jacket and Taro Okamoto writing the obi title, greatly highlighting Mazère's presence at CBS.
