Bach (1685-1750)

Description:

[The impact of 40 years ago still lives on today. A merkmal in the history of Bach performance, showing the state of isolation that Gould had reached. The debut album "Goldberg Variations," which made the young Glenn Gould a household name worldwide. Goldberg Variations" was released in September 1982, about a month before Gould's death, and was the last album to be released before his death. Bach's "Goldberg Variations" frames Gould's life like a closing circle, and is an indispensable work in considering his unique music. Gould performed the Variations in their entirety 27 times during his performing career (1954-1961), but more than that, they have become synonymous with Gould. Gould is Goldberg, and vice versa. This album is a sole reissue to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Gould's birth, the 40th anniversary of his death, and the 40th anniversary of the release of this 1981 edition of the "Goldberg Variations". In recording "Goldberg" for the second time, Gould was very conscious of the overall structure and tempo continuity of the work, so he was very careful to play back the last part of the previous take of the variations to check the tempo and expression before starting to play. The result is a superb recording of the depths of Gould's Bach playing, 13 minutes slower than the 1955 recording, with a depth that borders on the philosophical. The master used is a DSD remaster first introduced to the world on State of Wonder in 2002, edited as directed by Gould and the producer from an analog master that was used as a backup alongside the digital recording. The booklet jacket reproduces the design of the first U.S. release (IM 37779), with a photograph of Gould in a dark blue shirt and jacket, which was scanned from the original positive in 2012 to bring it back to freshness, and the gold CBS Masterworks logo is also reproduced in the photograph. Inside the booklet is the jacket spread and backside design of the first release. Sony Music
