New works by the next ace of Spanish classical music, viola da gamba prodigy Fami Alcay, and his own classical music ensemble, Academia del Piacere, This is the second album by the Academia del Piacere for the German Harmonia Mundi. Fami Alkhai was born in 1976. He is regarded as one of the most gifted young viola da gamba players of our time and is widely recognized as an excellent interpreter of the ancient music repertoire with his unique and communicative approach. In 2002, he founded the Accademia del Piacere, of which he is the musical director. Their performances are "extraordinary and special" and "take the viola da gamba to new heights of joyful possibility" and "a lovely tribute to the viola da gamba's past and future," raved Gramophone UK. The "Colombina Songbook," housed for five centuries in the Columbus Library (Biblioteca Colombina) attached to the Seville Cathedral in Seville, Spain, is undoubtedly one of the great musical legacies of the Spanish Renaissance.Its scores include approximately 100 pieces of unique music from the Andalusian School of Music. They were purchased in 1534 by the exceptionally curious Hernando Colón, second son of the collection's founder, Christopher Columbus. They were probably edited by the Duchess of Medina-Sidonia, then based in Seville, and one of the first viola da gamba players in history is believed to have played some of the scores. Fami-Arcai, music director of the Accademia del Piacere, brought the score back to life here as an ensemble 500 years later. This recording is an attempt to recover some rarely performed Spanish Renaissance gems, including Juan de Urede's "Never has there been so much suffering," Yoan Ambrosio Dalzano's "Cabildo Castigliano," and Fami Alcay's own arrangements of "Cursing with a mournful cry and "Prelude=La Spagna" of unknown authorship, as well as a variety of other fascinating works.
