Michael League and the GroundUP label have been accelerating their interest in global music with albums such as Snarky Puppy, Bocante, and their own solo albums. One group they have been focusing on for the past few years is the duo of Natalie Cressman, a US female jazz singer/trombonist, and Ian Faquini, a Brazilian guitarist/singer of Ginga descent. Their last album was a collection of songs by Ginga, who is also Fachini's mentor, but their long-awaited new album is a simple and intimate work that reflects their true nature, without any pedantry. As Cressman says, "We aimed for a more organic recording than a superbly produced one," and the ensemble, which is in tune with their public and private partnership, is truly exceptional, as if the performance were unfolding in front of their eyes.The repertoire, which conveys the rich nuances of Brazil in a fresh way, is also excellent, including not only their own originals, which can be said to be directly descended from Ginga, but also songs by Iara Fejaira and Mauro Aguilar, as well as Noel Hoza and Domingueños & Anastacia at the beginning of the program.
