Monteverdi / Capella De La Torre

Description:

Capella de la Torre reveals Monteverdi's compositional techniques. Capella de la Torre is a German Renaissance instrumental wind ensemble specializing in medieval and Renaissance music, founded in 2005 by Munich-born shawm player Katharina Boiml, and named after Francisco de la Torre, a 16th century Spanish composer, and "de la Torre" (from the tower), a Spanish reference to a medieval minstrel who played music from a tower. The name is a play on the 16th century Spanish composer Francisco de la Torre and the Spanish "de la Torre" (from the top of the tower), a reference to the medieval bard who played music from the top of a tower. No other composer had such a diverse and lasting impact on the history of composition as Claudio Monteverdi circa 1600. No other composer had such a lasting impact. Since then, his wealth of musical ideas, such as the basso ostinato (an ostinato technique that repeats harmonic progressions, especially in the bass and above, with specific rhythmic patterns) and the lamento bass with its four descending tones, have been a source of inspiration for many later generations. This new album by Capella de la Torre, Monteverdi: Memories, focuses on Monteverdi's artistic development.Drawing on scores that the composer himself carefully prepared for publication, such as the secular "Madrigale Collection, Volume 8" (1638) and the sacred "Ethical and Religious Forest" (1641) published at the end of his life, Capella de la Torre traces his 20 years as a court musician in Mantova and The film traces his 20 years as a court musician in Mantova and the nearly 30 years he spent in Venice composing for the Society. Large ensemble pieces such as "How Blessed We Are" and "We Give Thanks to the Lord" are combined with smaller ensemble pieces such as "The West Wind Returns" and "Ballo's Introduction." A particularly central role in the works on this album is played by the "walking bass" (a pleasant beat at the tempo of a person walking, pulling the performance along with a gung, gung), an element that would eventually be heavily used in 20th century jazz, blues, and pop music. Cappella de la Torre charts the life of Monteverdi by examining the origins and style of his music. Sony Music
