A young Ormandy, "before the Philadelphia Orchestra," who excited the nation in the 1930s. All RCA recordings with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra are collected for the first time from the authorized original recordings. Fifty-three recordings, including previously unreleased recordings, are now available on CD for the first time in the world. Following last year's release of a 120-CD box of Ormandy's monaural recordings with the Philadelphia Orchestra on Columbia, the second Ormandy reissue is a collection of his recordings with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, which have been largely neglected until now. In 1938, Ormandy succeeded Leopold Stokowski as Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, a position he held for over 40 years. Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985) was the successor to Leopold Stokowski as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra, a position he held for more than 40 years. But "before Philadelphia," there was another historic partnership with the orchestra: the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. --Ormandy as Music Director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (1931-1936).This was an important, though much shorter, relationship for Ormandy than the one he had with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Ormandy came to the United States in 1921 to become a violinist at the Capitol Theatre in New York City, then moved to conduct the orchestra, including a stint as broadcast concert conductor for CBS Radio, and in 1931, at the age of 32, he caused a sensation in the United States when he substituted for Toscanini, who was suddenly taken ill at a subscription concert of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He became a sensation in the United States. When Henri Fairbrochen, the permanent conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, fell ill and a new conductor was urgently needed, Ormandy was appointed as his successor. Another miracle occurred when Ormandy substituted for Toscanini again on another occasion in a concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra. An RCA Victor executive listening to the performance was so impressed by the performance of an excerpt from Weinberger's opera "Schwanda the Bagpipe Blower" that he decided on the spot to record the piece with Ormandy.When contractual stipulations prevented the Philadelphia Orchestra from participating, Ormandy proposed that the recording project be done with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, of which he was then music director. The Minneapolis arrangement was extremely advantageous to RCA because the union stipulation allowed the recording to take place at no additional cost to either the conductor or the orchestra.
