The Cleveland Orchestra

Description:

The rare legacy of the master conductor Rosinski, who laid the foundation of the Cleveland Orchestra, is being reissued for the first time by Sony Classical. Following the release of Artur Rozinski's New York Philharmonic 16-CD set in 2021, Sony Classical is proud to present a 13-CD set of all of Rozinski's recordings for Columbia with the Cleveland Orchestra, of which he was music director from 1933 to 1943. The set features all of Rosinski's recordings with the Cleveland Orchestra, which he was music director of from 1933 to 1943, collected on 13 CDs. Artur Rozinski (1892-1958) was considered one of America's most exciting conductors of the 1930s. During his tenure as Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra, he conducted a spectacular performance of R. Strauss's "Elektra" with the New York Philharmonic in 1937. The performance was broadcast on radio throughout the United States and is still regarded as one of the greatest performances in the history of the New York Philharmonic. His interpretation of the music was influenced by Toscanini, whom Lodzinski looked up to as a role model, and he earned a reputation as a "fiery, fiery-tempered Polish conductor" (it is said that he carried a pistol in his pocket to ward off disgruntled players), He was music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1929-33) and the Cleveland Orchestra (1933-43) (he became an American citizen in 1933), gave the American premiere of Shostakovich's opera "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk County" in 1935, and in 1936, led the Vienna Philharmonic as American conductor at the Salzburg In 1936, he became the first American to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival.Toscanini was so impressed with his talent that he entrusted him with recruiting and training the members of the newly organized NBC Symphony Orchestra as an orchestra in 1938. During his tenure with the Cleveland Orchestra, Lodzinski built the orchestra into an outstanding ensemble, and his successor, George Sell, brought the ensemble to international prominence. In addition, Rosinski was active in Europe, becoming the first naturalized American to conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival. Toscanini admired his work so much that he commissioned him to audition members for the NBC Symphony Orchestra when it was organized in 1938. (1/2) Sony Music
