Pogorelich returns to his Chopin roots after a quarter of a century. This is the second album by the prodigious pianist Ivo Pogorelich under his long-term exclusive contract with Sony Classical, and his first Chopin album in 24 years, since the release of Chopin's "Scherzo" in 1998 (recorded in 1995). Chopin's works have been an integral part of Pogorelich's repertoire since the impact of the Chopin Competition in 1982, and he has released four albums to date. The album includes Chopin's masterpiece, "Piano Sonata No. 3," as well as two of his most beautiful pieces, "Boat Song" and "Nocturne," both of which are in Pogorelich's repertoire, but this is the first recording of these pieces. Pogorelich's style has changed over the years, so it is inevitable that this Chopin album will be completely unpredictable. The unique piano sound, with its jet-black heaviness, and the clear and precise touch with which each note is played, will surely reveal to us the unfathomable charms of Chopin's works that we have never known before. Pogorelich's Chopin Ever since his participation in the 1980 International Chopin Competition, Chopin's works have occupied an important place in Pogorelich's performance career.This was reflected in his recordings, and his debut album for Deutsche Grammophon, recorded in February 1981, was all Chopin, including Piano Sonata No. 2 "Funeral," Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 45, Scherzo No. 3, Nocturne No. 16, Op. 55-2, and Nocturne No. 8, Op. 10-8, Op. 10-10, and Nocturne No. 18, Op. 25-6. The concerto was followed in February 1983 by the Piano Concerto No. 2 in C sharp minor, Op. 45. In the summer of 2021, the works included in this album were recorded in Riding, Austria, known as Liszt's birthplace. A look at the program of Pogorelich's past performances in Japan shows that Piano Sonata No. 3 was performed during his second visit to Japan in 1983, and two nocturnes were already included in the program of his 1991 visit. These three pieces have been performed repeatedly on subsequent visits to Japan. Pogorelich has also added a few previously unrecorded Chopin works to his repertoire, including Piano Concerto No. 1, Ballades Nos. 2 and 3, and the Boat Song.The Fantasy is one such piece, and was included in the "All-Chopin Program" scheduled for the March 2021 concert in Japan, which was cancelled due to the Corona disaster (other programs were Three Mazurkas Op. 59, Piano Sonata No. 3, Lullaby, and Fantasy Polonaise).
