Buck Meek, the guitarist of Big Thief, has released his latest solo album, "Haunted Mountain," on the 4AD label. He co-wrote 5 of the 11 songs on the album with his longtime friend, American female singer Jolie Holland.The first two verses and chorus of "Haunted Mountain," the album's title track and lead single, were written by Jolie Holland as a love song dedicated to Mount Shasta in northern California, with Buck Meek adding the final verse, both calling for a reciprocal relationship with nature. The song is a call for reciprocity with nature. The song is about being humble about what you are empowered to do, and from there, a real, fair relationship begins." Buck Meek's band has consistently featured Adam Brisbin (guitar), Austin Vaughan (drums), and Matt Davidson (pedal steel, bass on "Buck Meek" and "Two Saviors") since its debut. In the year or so leading up to the recording of this album, "Haunted Mountain," Ken Woodward (bass) and Buck Meek's brother, Dylan, joined the sessions on piano and synth.Produced by Davidson, a member of the band, the album was recorded and mixed in two weeks by Adrian Olsen, who also did the sound processing with modular synthesizers. Here is a new masterpiece that combines earthy, gentle indie folk with luscious lyrics. In addition to the standard CD/LP, the import version will be released on limited green vinyl.
