Description:
This collection combines works that were well known in the 18th century but are rarely heard today with works by Bach, and focuses on the brilliant violin playing technique. Westhoff (1656-1705) was a member of the Dresden court orchestra from 1674-97 and a violin virtuoso who traveled extensively throughout Europe, including Italy, France, Austria, and England, where he was highly regarded, He was still going strong when the 18-year-old Bach stayed in Weimar for a few months as a violinist. Westhoff's violin music concentrates all the techniques of polyphonic playing, and he is considered the greatest master of polyphonic violin music before Bach. Corelli (1653-1713) was the perfectionist of the concerto grosso and trio sonata, and also founded the Roman School of Music as a violinist. He was also a pioneer of the modern violin technique, and both his compositions and playing techniques had a profound influence on later generations.Montanari (1676-1737) was a pupil of Corelli and a virtuoso violinist in Rome during Handel's time, a composer who has not yet been studied in depth. This is a performance by two of the members of Four Times Baroque, an ensemble founded in Frankfurt in 2013 by four young musicians, only 20 years old at the time, and acclaimed as one of the most exciting ensembles of the new generation of Baroque performers. Violinist Jonas Cenderlein began serious study of baroque violin at the age of 11, and at 17 was the soloist and concertmaster of the youth baroque orchestra "Bachs Erben Bachs Erben" based in Michaelstein, Germany. In this program, he always discusses the historical background and aims to base his performances on the latest material research in 2018. In this album, only the simplest combination of violin and harpsichord is used, with no other passages added. As a result, the melodies and techniques of the violins are vividly projected. Already described as "a fresh, energetic, and thrilling performance," their playing is superb in its discernment of melody lines, and even in its gravity and elegance. Sony Music
