Christoph Prégardien, a rare evangelical historian and a well-known German lieder singer, has recorded his first solo album with Deutsche Harmonia Mundi as a baritone. This is his first recording as a baritone. The album features two cantatas by Telemann and one by Bach, with orchestral works by Fasch, Telemann, and Handel. Telemann wrote more than 1,400 religious cantatas, many of them for solo baritone. It is said that this is because Telemann himself had a wonderful baritone voice. The "I will rejoice and bear my cross" is one of the most dramatic and well-known of Bach's cantatas. Pregardien has been active as a tenor singer, but in recent years, in addition to conducting, he has moved to baritone and has been trying his hand at lower-pitched works, and this album is his first as a baritone.
