Jacqueline du Pré, a popular female cellist prodigy who made numerous recordings for the former EMI, was acclaimed by the New York Times in 1967 as "clearly born to play the cello," and only five years later, at the young age of 28, she was diagnosed with a tragic and incurable disease and died at age 42.
