Description:
Debussy began composing "The Sea" (three symphonic sketches) in Burgundy in 1903-1904. These are not merely pictorial depictions of seascapes and musicalizations of them, but also musicalizations of the mental images and impressions received from the richness of the sea, whose story changes its flavor from moment to moment as time passes, and from its reality. For Debussy, this is not to deny that he describes elements and weather phenomena that make him more alive about nature than Beethoven's "Rural Symphony." Instead, he invented, he reacted to nature through his art and sought something to contrast it with. This "Sea" contains much of the interest in Orientalism and Japonisme that prevailed in the largely French art world at the time, and is more dramatic, more affirmative, and less lighthearted, but is replaced by a powerful impulse by a faint mist. Reflecting Debussy's lifelong love affair with the sea, the music was further stirred by a sense of ecstasy; it was completed on March 5, 1905, and premiered on October 15 of the same year at the Lamoureux Concert under the direction of Camille Chevillard.Debussy later decided that the finale, bars 237-244, had a fanfare, which was inappropriate, and when the new edition (as it is usually performed today) was published in 1909, that section was cut. The final track of this album includes an excerpt of a performance of the version that includes the fanfare. Debussy is one of the French conductor Clivine's most favorite composers. Clivine had recorded "The Sea" with the Orchestre National de Lyon (DENON) and the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra (Timpani), and now he is recording it with the Orchestre National de France, for which he has become music director. Clivine's overflowing sonorous imagination controls the vivid contrasts, clean textures, and balance of each instrument to portray the sensuous music of the brilliant Debussy. Warner Music Japan
