Paquito D'Rivera

Description:

The 56th Grammy Award winner in the Latin Jazz Album category, Cuba's celebrated musician Paquito D'Rivera presents his new work: a live performance merging "Jazz" + "Classical" with Cuban music! A fusion of jazz and classical music by Cuba's great musician, Paquito D'Rivera. When you think of Paquito, the first image is undoubtedly Latin music—whether it's his work with Chucho Valdés in Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna, or founding Irakere in 1973 with Chucho Valdés and Arturo Sandoval. However, as he showed us during his Tokyo performance last year, where he performed with Makoto Ozone and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, his roots are in classical music! Influenced by his father, a classical saxophonist, he played the clarinet from an early age and performed many classical pieces. His repertoire at that time, when he was even called a child prodigy, included Mozart, Beethoven, Ellington, and Goodman. This work features Paquito's regular sextet confronting "classical" music, imaginatively fusing his "Cuban roots" with "jazz improvisation." The opening, based on Chopin's Fantaisie-Impromptu and incorporating Hilarion Durán's arrangement—also performed during last year's Japan tour—is particularly noteworthy. Paquito's playing intertwines flawlessly with the dazzling piano over an upbeat tempo. His breathtaking technique is magnificent, but the unexpected fusion with Latin rhythms is truly astonishing. The superlative ensemble, fiery, passionate solos, and a dash of humor are all mixed together. Who could have imagined such a Fantaisie-Impromptu? This recording captures the 2012 live performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in New York. It presents a fascinating fusion of prestigious classical music and joyous Cuban sounds. This album reveals a new facet of Paquito D'Rivera's artistry.
