Description:
Finland's brilliant Jon Stuhlgård! He was Principal Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra from 2008 to 2015, and is currently Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic and the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada, as well as Artistic Director of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra. He was catapulted into the limelight by the worldwide success of his two 150th anniversary discs, Sibelius: The Complete Symphonies (CHAN 10809) and Nielsen: The Complete Symphonies (CHAN 10859), released in 2014-2015, followed by the release of George Anttille's Orchestral Works (CHAN 10859), and the release of the complete symphonic works of George Anttille (CHAN 10809). The new Chandos recording with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra features a Shostakovich recording. The Eleventh Symphony, subtitled "1905" after the "Bloody Sunday" incident and with titles for each movement, has a controversial relationship to the "Hungarian Revolution" and its political agenda, but its grandiose, cinematic score, with quotations from various of Shostakovich's own compositions, revolutionary songs, and labor songs, is unquestionably one of his masterpieces. There is no doubt that it is one of Shostakovich's masterpieces. Stoolgård and the BBC Philharmonic have recorded this intense work in SACD surround sound on Chandos, which is renowned for its high quality recordings of orchestral works. Another unique feature is that instead of the usual orchestral tubular bells, they use four church bells on loan from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Tokyo M-Plus
