Trio Gaspard was formed in 2010 and has become one of the most popular piano trios of its generation. Their latest release, "Berlin Stories," focuses on three composers who lived in Berlin for a time, each for different reasons and under different circumstances. All three members currently live in Berlin or have lived there in the past, and in this album they express their love and admiration for the fascinating and vibrant metropolis. Felix Mendelssohn's (1809-1847) grandfather, the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, was a leading figure in the Jewish Enlightenment movement, which placed the family in a prominent position in Berlin and encouraged the development of Felix and Fanny's musical talent. His "Piano Trio No. 2" is a masterpiece that skillfully combines classical style and technique with a Romantic sensibility, and was an influence on Brahms. Paul Juon (1872-1940), a Swiss-Russian, studied at the Higher School of Music in Berlin in 1894, where he remained until 1934.The "Chain of Prayers" has a uniqueness not normally found in the piano trio repertoire, and is a tour de force with the scale and ambition of a Richard Strauss symphonic poem. Greek composer Nikos Skalkottas (1904-1949) arrived in Berlin in 1921 and stayed until 1933. He studied composition with several prominent musicians and attended master classes with Schoenberg.
