BBC Symphony principal horn player Martin Owen! Martin Owen, one of Europe's leading horn players, is now available on Chandos. Owen has performed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, serving as principal horn of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra from 1998 to 2008, and currently holds the position of principal horn of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has also served as solo hornist with the major London orchestras as well as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. This album features Weber's Small Concerto, composed for natural horn and requiring a variety of techniques, including polyphony. Richard Strauss composed the Concerto No. 1 at the young age of 18 under the influence of his father, Franz, who was also a horn player, and it is still one of the most important works in the horn repertoire.In addition to the Mozart-like Concerto No. 2, composed 60 years after the birth of No. 1, Schumann's Konzertstück for four horns and orchestra was performed by Owen, Christopher Parkes (Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia of London), Alec Frank-Gemmill (Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra), and Sarah Willis (Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra), The concerto is a masterpiece for horn, with Owen, Christopher Parks (Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia of London), Alek Frank-Gemmill (Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra), and Sarah Willis (Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra). The concert will be supported by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and John Wilson, whose reputation continues to grow, as evidenced by his receipt of the 2022 Recording Academy Award and Gramophone Award.
