Description:
The first complete recording of Mark Blitzstein's (1905-1964) "The Cradle Will Rock", a musical drama famous in American music history, was to have been premiered in 1937 under the direction of Orson Welles, but the content was deemed problematic, and just before the first performance the WPA, the public works promotion agency that had supported the production, pulled out. The WPA, which had supported the production, pulled out of the production just before the premiere, and even banned singers and orchestras from appearing. Welles and his colleagues came up with a plan, arranged for a different theater, and managed to get around the situation by using only Blitzstein's piano as accompaniment, while the performers who were prohibited from appearing on stage sang and performed in the audience. This incident became legendary and was even made into a movie in later years. On the other hand, the production itself was only rarely performed in the United States. Since there has never been an authentic and complete recording of the work, this CD is extremely valuable. The fact that John Mauceri, known as an advocate of Bernstein and Korngold, conducts this CD is also a luxury. Tobu Land System
