A tribute album focusing on her musical works will be released. Curated by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, "OCEAN CHILD: SONGS OF YOKO ONO," which will be released on February 18 to coincide with Yoko Ono's 89th birthday, is a collection of her songs covered by artists from various generations and genres. The biggest hurdle I had to clear as an advocate was that the breadth of Yoko's work was largely unknown to the public. She is an artist whose work ranges from avant-garde to bubblegum pop on a single album. I think her songwriting has been criminally overlooked for too long. She has consistently produced melodies that are as memorable as the best pop songwriters.As a lyricist, she has always written lyrics that are poetic, sophisticated, and deeply introspective," said Ben Gibbard, "and this album brings together artists who share Ben Gibbard's sentiments and are as influenced and inspired by Yoko Ono's work as he is. In addition to "Who Has Seen The Wind?", a collaboration between David Byrne and Yola Tengo, which was released as a road single from the album, the Flaming Lips, Deerhoof, Japanese Breakfast, Sharon Van Etten, We Are King, Magne, and the band's own "The Wind", We Are King, Steven Merritt of Magnetic Fields, and Death Cab for Cutie have recorded new songs for the album.
